Keep or Toss???

Ok everybody,
I need your help here.  I have a BUNCH of old magazines that I've kept and let the kids use for various projects/assignments.  Luckily, I downloaded these pictures before the whole camera vs. car incident:

Now, I have to say that I have embraced the "Toss, toss, toss" mantra (yesterday I tossed some cardboard squares, toothpicks, and some old posters...yeah me!), but I think the problem with these is that I really do use them.  Ok, maybe not a WHOLE lot, but probably 2-3 times during the year. So I guess what it comes down to is that I will use a few, but how many should I  keep?  Help me out here...whadd'ya think?

  1. I keep at least a class set on hand in case we're doing something where everyone needs a magazine. I keep a crate of them and the students use them as one of my centers. They can cut out sight words, words they know, or cut out individual letters to spell spelling words or word wall words. I have to have a student go through the crate every now and then to clean it up as it gets scrappy.

  2. I think it is pretty easy to get more magazines so I won't store them for just a few times. Do your kids all do the activity at the same time (so you need a class set) or is it a center (so you need 6)? My kids were always given cutting out of magazines as homework and I hated it (what exactly are they learning?). Congrats on choosing to declutter!

  3. Thanks, guys! I think I'm going to get rid of most of them. I read enough magazines that I could get more if I need them! Thanks for your help!
