Sweet Words and Being a Writer

My kiddos gave me the sweetest compliment today, and I don't even think they realized how it touched my heart.  We were talking about how many days we'd been in school (120 days today) and then moved on to how many days of school were left.  One little girl got confused and heard me say "How many days are left?" and thought we were talking about in the week.  She said, "1".  When I said, "Oh no, you mean tomorrow is the last day of school?!"  To which my sweeties all started saying things like, "I don't want it to be summer." and "I don't want school to be over."  Yep, it made my day.

Our district is looking at adopting a new reading series this year.  With all of the new Common Core Standards, they really want to get away from a basal series and are looking for options that are better aligned with CCSS.  Currently, this is the main option we are looking at:

Yep - that's the whole kit.  No more reading basal for the kids to read from.  Here's what the website says about the Making Meaning program:
"The program uses nonfiction and fiction read-aloud books to teach students nine different comprehension strategies while also developing their social values to create a supportive community of readers."
and about the Being a Writer component:
"The program has two goals: to develop the creativity and skills of a writer, and to develop the social and ethical values of a responsible person. It uses high-quality trade books for genre immersion and author studies, and easy-to-teach mini-lessons to reinforce the skills and conventions taught in the program. Writing instruction, regular community-building elements, and guided partner work are integrated to develop in students a sense of autonomy, belonging, and competence."

I'm actually really excited about this.  I've never really been a basal kinda gal, if you know what I mean.  The best part is that our district bought a kit of each component to pilot in my classroom.  We started the writing program this week and it's really going well.  Now, let me just say that I have never claimed to be a super writing teacher.  In fact, I stink at teaching writing writing is my most challenging subject to teach!  But today was AWESOME!!  The program really focuses a lot on having the kids sharing and discussing their writing with each other.  This week, we are working on writing opinion pieces.  After discussing what an opinion is, I wrote a model piece on my favorite t.v. show.  I've been using this pack I purchased on TpT:

I then used the sheet included in this pack and had the kids brainstorm things that they had an opinion about.  Today, we reviewed the model writing and they were able to choose what topic they wanted to write about from their brainstorm sheet.
Now, here's where the magic comes in.  Based on the lesson from Being a Writer, I went through the model writing sentence by sentence.  After I read my sentence, I had them turn to their partner and share what their topic sentence (or reason, or closing sentence, etc) would say.  Once we went through the whole example, I told them, "Now, you already know what you're going to write!  You just have to put it down on paper."  Their eyes got really big and they were so excited to write.  We actually were running a little late for lunch, so I passed out paper and told them that they only had about 2 minutes to write their name, the date, and their topic sentence.  You know what - EVERY child was able to get done in that 2 minutes!
Now, usually, I have those who, even after extensive modeling, interactive writing, etc.  just sit there and can't really get started.  Nope, not now.  Tomorrow, we will share with our partners again and write the rest of our opinion piece.

If this is any indication of how the rest of the lessons in writing will go, I am super excited!  I actually can't wait until writing time tomorrow!  If you want to check out this series, you can find more information at

On another note, I did the most awesome activity the other day.  We were learning about the long a sound.  The week before, we had learned the different ways to make the long e sound.  This week, I wanted them to do more interacting with long a words.  Sooo, I printed out some long a words on index cards and made sure that I had 3 different ways to make the long a sound.  I did words with a__e, ay, and ai.  I passed them out randomly to the kids and told them not to show anyone at first, but just to read the word on their card.  I then told them that on the count of 3, they would have to walk around and find other people that had a word that had the long a sound spelled the same way.  Remember, at this point, I haven't told them the different ways to make the sound.  They had such a fun time trying to find their group.  The best part was to hear them discuss why they should or should not be together.  For example, in this group:

she was telling him that she belonged in a group with him.  He had the word "stain" and she had the word "pail".  He kept saying, "No, you have to have 'ain' in the word" (he had already found someone with the word 'train').  She was telling him that the 'n' didn't matter - only the 'ai' makes the a sound.  She was finally able to convince him that she, in fact, did belong to the group.  It was awesome to walk around and hear the kids having conversations like this all over the room.
After they found their group, they had to explain to the rest of the class why they belonged together.  The first 2 groups did great, but when we got to the a__e group, they first said, "all our words have an a, then a 't', and then an 'e'."  One of the kids in the other groups said, "but that word doesn't have a t".  So they had to go back and discuss with their group again and came up with "our words have 'ae'.  And again, someone pointed out that the a and e weren't together in the word.  They finally came up with "our words have 'a', then another letter, then an 'e'."
It was sooo great to watch those kids figuring it out on their own and discussing their thinking with their classmates. And it didn't take anything other than some index cards!  Have you had any "great" moments this week?

The Best Part of the Super Bowl

For me, the best part of the Super Bowl is definitely the commercials!  In case you missed any of them yesterday,  here is a link to our local news station where they have organized them all for you!

Sorry for the super short post tonight, but I'm still trying to get over this nasty cold (and I have about a million things to grade - I haven't even graded their writing about their Christmas vacation yet, lol)!
Enjoy the commercials!  I would love for you to leave me a comment about what your favorite commercial was.  I loved the Budweiser one with the little Clydesdale.  So cute.  I also liked the Dodge commercial about the farmer and the Jeep commercial.  Those were my faves, what were yours?

Currently...I have a cold

This has been a really crazy week for me.  On Sunday as we were eating dinner, he said, "I want to go to the doctor tomorrow."  Now, I knew he had a cold (which he probably got from me), so I told him that it was just a cold and he had to suck it up and go to school (yeah, I'm that kinda mom - you're not staying home unless you are seriously ill).  So Monday morning, I can tell that he feels yucky, but hey - so did I.  Right as we are walking out the door (15 min. before I had to be there), he starts crying and asking me to take his temperature.  So, I did and it was 102.  Okie dokie.

So we rush to school and I get the only sub left (and yes, there was a reason that was the only sub left).  I ended up being out Monday and Tuesday.  Then, Wednesday was our 100th day of school, so that was a little crazy.  Then, on Thursday afternoon, my son's teacher called to tell me he had spiked a fever again.  Luckily, my hubby was able to stay home with him today.  Unfortunately, my head cold returned today and now my son feels great and I feel yucky!

Since all I want to do right now is go to bed, here is this month's Currently:

Listening - Have y'all ever watched this show?  I used to watch it every week, but got out of it.  Sometimes it's pretty interesting.  I wish some of the people in charge of education would go undercover in my classroom.  I don't think they'd last a day - just sayin'
Loving - yep, I've got some AWESOME volunteers this year.  I have a Monday grandma (who is a retired teacher), a Tuesday/Thursday mom (who is just great), and a Friday grandma (who is also a retired teacher).  What more could a girl ask for?
Thinking - yeah, I'm tired of spending my weekends planning.  I need to just bite the bullet and get it done during the week.
Wanting - That speaks for itself
Needing - I just want to feel better!
Pet Peeves - Y'all know the teachers I'm talking about.  The ones who have been doing the same thing for years on end and whenever you mention something new and different they act like you're asking them to chop off an arm.  It just bugs me, you know.

Now, I'm off to lay in bed and watch some TV until I crash.  Hopefully, I'll feel better tomorrow!
